Montessori reached the United States early: the first school opened in New York State in 1911, and the following year Mabel and Alexander Graham Bell opened another in Washington. In 1913 they welcomed Maria Montessori on her visit to the country and backed the first American Montessori association, and in 1915 a glass-walled classroom at the San Francisco exposition showed the method to thousands of visitors. That enthusiasm faded within a few years, and the method only returned in 1958, when Nancy McCormick Rambusch opened Whitby School in Connecticut; in 1960 she founded the American Montessori Society (AMS). Today the US has more Montessori schools than any other country, many of them public or charter.
